I have simple steps that make crispy Brussels and an extra step that is simple but helps get the crispy edges and savory taste. Smashed Brussels sprouts are a great addition to any holiday dinner along with all the traditions and family recipes. You start with fresh Brussels sprouts par boil them, smash them, and bake until they have the most delicious crispy edges.

Ingredients needed for crispy smashed brussels sprouts: 

  • Fresh Brussels Sprouts
  • ​Olive Oil
  • Salt and Pepper
  • Grated Parmesan Cheese
  • ​Garlic Powder
  • Freshly Grated Parmesan Cheese (Costco Brand)

How to make Smashed Brussel Sprouts Step by Step:

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 425° F (or 219° C)
  2. The first step is to rinse fresh Brussels sprouts and trim off the bottom about 1/8 of an inch. Discard any outer leaves that fall off. 
  3. Boil a large pot of salted water.
  4. have a large bowl of ice water ready. 
  5. When the water is boiling, add the Brussels sprouts to the water and boil for about 6 to 8 minutes until the sprouts are fork tender. 
  6. Drain and plunge into the ice water to stop the cooking process. This extra step ice bath keeps the sprouts the lovely green color. 
  7. Remove the Brussels sprouts from the water and dry them on a clean kitchen towel or paper towel to help keep them crispy when they cook. 
  8. Place the par cooked Brussels sprouts on a sheet pan and coat with 2 tablespoons of olive oil.
  9. Take the bottom of a mason jar and press down firmly to make flat smached sprouts like you would to make smashed potatoes. 
  10.  Arrange the sprouts in a single layer on the sheet pan. 
  11. Salt, pepper, and garlic powder to taste. Sprinkle on the grated parmesan cheese and then top with the freshly grated parmesan cheese. 
  12. Bake in the preheated oven at 425° F for 25 to 30 minutes. Keep a watch to ensure the sprouts have nice crispy edges but do not burn.
