What is Apple Butter

Apple butter is a thicker, spreadable, spicer apple sauce. It is cooked down to a thick sauce that you can spread on bread, rolls, or eat like apple sauce. It is darker in color and has a lot of fantastic fall spices.

Traditionally when making a homemade old fashioned apple butter it cooks on the stove for hours or in a slow cooker for hours. But you can have this delicious fall treat in under an hour with the Instant Pot.

Apple Butter Made Simple with the Instant Pot

Traditionally apple butter is made by cooking down apples for hours on the stove. Standing and stirring and watching over the delicious spreadable apple butter. Your mother or grandmother may have made it this way for years.Β  But we do not have this kind of time.

With a house full of kids, and full or part-time jobs. Busy after school activities can make this type of traditional cooking something you just dream about.

But with the Instant Pot, you can have your apple butter and eat it too. Hands Free, or Hands Off whichever way you think of it the Instant Pot electric pressure cooker does all the work. You load it up and let it work for you while you spend time with your family.

Why you need the Spiralizer Attachment for your KitchenAid Mixer

You may have seen all the fun low carb zucchini noodle recipes online. I even have a spicy zoodle recipe if you are interested in going here. There are tons of kitchen gadgets that will spiral a zucchini. I have bought at least 5 of them (all in the trash except this one).Β

The only one that has worked for me is the KitchenAid Spiralizer attachment. Made to last out of steel and uses the power of your mixer. It will peel, core, and slice your apple all in one step.Β  Apple peeling always hurts my hands by the time I am done, but not anymore.

Remember the fresher the apple the better the apple butter. The best apples can be found at a local orchard near your home. They will be freshly picked from the current season.

How to make Apple Butter in the Instant Pot with the help of a Spiralizer Attachment

If you have a KitchenAid Stand Mixer you will love the KitchenAid Spiralizer. With this attachment to your mixer, you will be able to make food prep quick and easy. You can spiralize a lot of fruits and vegetables, but apple is one of the best.

If you have ever made an apple pie, apple, crisp, or apple butter, and by the time you were done peeling the apples with a paring knife your hand was hurting. Or if you are getting older like I am and stiffness sets in faster than you would like, you will love the spiralizer attachment.  The attachment comes with 5 different blades and a peeler.

I was able to peel, core, and slice all my apples in about 10 minutes. The mixer did all the work as it powers the spiralizer attachment and you end up with all the work done for you. You will end up with a plate of peeled skin, a core on the attachment, and the apples sliced and spiralized all in one step.  Then all you need do is add all the ingredients into the instant pot and set the pressure and timer.

Description

Simple spicy delicious fall flavors

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 8 to 10 large apples
  • 1/2 cup of apple cider (or apple juice)
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground clove
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice in water to keep apples from turning brown drain before mixing

Instructions

  1. Wash the apples first
  2. peel, cut, and core the apples, I use the Kitchenaid Spiral attachment but you can just use a paring knife.
  3. As you are preparing your apples put them in a large bowl of water with the lemon juice to keep the apples from turning brown. This is just air changing the color of the apple, this step can be skipped but I like to keep my apple looking fresh.
  4. Drain the water off of the apples and put the apples in the inner pot of the Instant Pot.
  5. Add to the apples, the apple cider, maple syrup, brown sugar, clove, nutmeg, allspice cinnamon, Stir.
  6. Set the lid on the Instant Pot, lock and set the top to seal.
  7. Set to low pressure for 25 minutes.
  8. When the 25 minutes are done do a slow release for 10 minutes.
  9. If the apple butter is too thin, with the lid off, set to saute and boil for 5 to 10 minutes releasing some of the water and allowing the apple butter to thicken.
  10. When done remove the inner pot and set on a heat-safe surface to cool.
  11. When cool you can store in glass jars, glass or plastic storage containers.
  12. Keeps in the refrigerator for 3 weeks.
