What is a Traditional Japanese Sukiyaki?

Sukiyaki is a Japanese dish made with thinly sliced beef and vegetables cooked in a sweet soy sauce. First made in 1868 to 1912 started as cooked at the table in a shallow cast iron pot. 

Sukiyaki beef is a newer dish in Japan as beef was not eaten in Japan until the late 1800s when Japan was opened to Western culture. Beef became more popular in Japan when the then Emperor celebrated the new year by eating meat.  Before this time, Buddhism banned eating beef.

How to Make Easy Japanese Beef and Vegetable Sukiyaki Stir Fry

  • The sukiyaki beef for this dish needs to be very thin. You can cut your own thin beef or you can buy thinly sliced beef at your local store.
  • Use a large skillet so that you have plenty of room and set it to medium-high heat.
  • Add your olive oil and let the oil warm.
  • Add the beef slices to your pan. Start by getting a good sere on the beef. Moving the beef around to get all sides brown.
  • When the beef is brown, push the meat to one side of the pan and start adding the veggies.
  • Add a little more oil if needed add the onions, and cook until they are translucent.
  • Add the mushrooms and the Asian veggies and mix all to get there with the meat.
  • Reduce the stove to medium heat.
  • While the meat and veggies are still cooking make the sauce.
  • Mix together the flour, water brown sugar, and soy sauce. Make sure to mix the flour and water with a fork or whisk to make sure you do not have any lumps.
  • Add the sauce to the pan and cook on low heat until the sauce thickens.

This recipe can be made in different ways by adding or substituting different fresh vegetables. 

  • Use Fresh Shiitake Mushrooms
  • Use Green Onions

Ingredients

  • 1 & 1/2 lbs Flank Steak sliced thin & bite-size pieces
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cups of sliced mushrooms, or 2 small cans of sliced mushrooms
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 2 cans La Choy CHOP SUEY VEGETABLES Asian Cuisine
  • If not using the mixed vegetables: 1 – 5 oz can bamboo shoots, drained & rinsed, 1 can of bean sprouts, 1 – 5 oz can water chestnuts sliced drained & rinsed, and 1 can sweet red peppers drained & rinsed.
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • Optional Rice to serve over.

  4. Add the beef to your pan. Start by getting a good sear on the beef. Moving the beef around to get all sides brown.
  5. Push the meat to one side of the pan and start adding the veggies. (you can also remove the meat and set it aside)
  6. Add a little more oil if needed and add the onions, and cook until they are translucent.
  7. Add the mushrooms and the Asian veggies and mix all to get there with the meat.
  8. Reduce the heat to medium.
  9. While the meat and veggies are still cooking make the sauce.
  10. Mix together the flour, water brown sugar, and soy sauce. Make sure to mix the flour and water with a fork or whisk to make sure you do not have any lumps.
  11. Add the sauce to the pan and cook on low until the sauce thickens
  12. When thick and bubbly, remove from heat, and serve over rice.

Notes

How to make rice on the stovetop: 1 cup of rice to 2 cups of water if made on the stovetop. Bring to a boil and reduce heat, cook on low for 15 minutes until water is absorbed.

How to make rice in the  Instant Pot: 1 cup of rice to 1 cup of water in the inner pot of the Instant Pot. Secure the lid, and set it to the rice setting. High pressure 3 minutes, slow-release 10 minutes.  Do not fast release or the rice will burn on the bottom.
