What is Sukiyaki?

Sukiyaki is a Japanese dish made with thin sliced beef, vegetables cooked in a soy source and sugar sauce. First made in 1868 to 1912 started as cooked at the table in a shallow iron pot. 

Sukiyaki is a newer dish in Japan as beef was not eaten in Japan until the late 1800s when Japan was opened to western culture. Beef became more popular in Japan then the then Emperor celebrated the new year by eating meat.  Prior to this time, Buddhism banned eating beef.

How to Make Easy Japanese Beef and Vegetable Sukiyaki Stir Fry

  • The beef for this dish needs to very think. You can cut your own thin beef or you can buy thinly sliced beef at your local store.
  • Use a large skillet so that you have plenty of room and set to medium-high heat.
  • Add your olive oil and let the oil warm.
  • Add the beef to your pan. Start by getting a good sere on the beef. Moving the beef around to get all sides brown.
  • Push the meat to one side of the pan and start adding the veggies.
  • Add a little more oil if needed and add the onions, cook until they are translusant.
  • Add the mushrooms and the Asian veggies and mix all to get there with the meat.
  • Reduce the heat to medium.
  • While the meat and veggies are still cooking make the sauce.
  • Mix together the flour, water brown sugar and soysauce. Make sure to mix the flour and water with a fork or whisk to make sure you do not have any lump.
  • Add the sauce to the pan and cook on low until the sauce thickens

Easy Japanese Beef And Vegetable Sukiyaki Stir Fry

Easy homemade Japanese Beef Sukiyaki is a one pot stir fry dinner perfect for a busy weeknight.Β  Simple to put together with prepared Asian vegetables Sukiyaki will quickly become one of your go-to family favorites.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 & 1/2 lbs Flank Steak sliced thin & bite-size pieces
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cups of sliced mushrooms, or 2 small cans of sliced mushrooms
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 2 cans La Choy CHOP SUEY VEGETABLES Asian Cuisine
  • If not using the mixed vegetables: 1 – 5 oz can bamboo shoots, drained & rinsed, 1 can of bean sprouts, 1 – 5 oz can water chestnuts sliced drained & rinsed and 1 can sweet red peppers drained & rinsed.
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • Optional Rice to serve over.

Instructions

  3. Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil and heat for 1 minute.Β 
  4. Add the beef to your pan. Start by getting a good sear on the beef. Moving the beef around to get all sides brown.
  5. Push the meat to one side of the pan and start adding the veggies. (you can also remove the meat and set aside)
  6. Add a little more oil if needed and add the onions, cook until they are translucent.
  7. Add the mushrooms and the Asian veggies and mix all to get there with the meat.
  8. Reduce the heat to medium.
  9. While the meat and veggies are still cooking make the sauce.
  10. Mix together the flour, water brown sugar, and soy sauce. Make sure to mix the flour and water with a fork or whisk to make sure you do not have any lump.
  11. Add the sauce to the pan and cook on low until the sauce thickens
  12. When thick and bubbly, remove from heat, serve over rice.

Notes

How to make rice on the stovetop: 1 cup of rice to 2 cups of water if making on the stovetop. Bring to boil and reduce heat, cook on low for 15 minutes until water is absorbed.

How to make rice in theΒ  Instant Pot: 1 cup of rice to 1 cup of water in the inner pot of Instant Pot. Secure the lid, set to the rice setting. Hight pressure 3 minutes, slow-release 10 minutes.Β  Do not fast release or the rice will burn on the bottom.
